Police Department - Records

The Records Section is located in the Smithfield Police Department at 110 S 5th Street. The Records staff is responsible for data entry of orders for arrest and subpoenas, crime analysis reports, and submission of statistics to the State Bureau of Investigation and for the Federal Uniform Crime Report (UCR).

A uniform officer takes the initial report and it is them turned over to the Records Section for processing. All information gathered during the initial report and afterwards in supplemental form is entered into a computer software program called PISTOL. Accident reports are also entered by the investigating officer into the PISTOL program. This information is entered via MDCs (Mobile Data Computers) from the officer's vehicle. A printed copy of each accident report is submitted to the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. All motor vehicle accident data is housed with NCDMV.

The Records Section usually receives incident reports within 24 hours after the report is filed, however accident reports generally take 3-5 business days. There is no charge for reports. There is a public terminal in the front lobby of the Police Department that houses a public copy of all incident, arrest and accident reports. (Note: Information pertaining to juveniles, sex assault victims and missing persons are blacked out. The details or narrative of the incident is also not available.)
