Board of Adjustment
The Board of Adjustment of Smithfield shall consist of five (5) regular members. Four (4) members are to be in-town residents who are appointed by the Smithfield Town Council. One (1) regular member is to be a resident from the area of extraterritorial jurisdiction surrounding the Town of Smithfield who is appointed by the Board of Commissioners of Johnston County. Two (2) alternate members shall also serve on the Board of Adjustment. One (1) alternate member shall be a resident from the area of extraterritorial jurisdiction surrounding the Town of Smithfield and shall be appointed by the Board of Commissioners of Johnston County. Alternate members are to be appointed for the same term, at the same time, and in the same manner as regular members. Alternate members shall participate in the business before the Board whenever a regular member of the Board is either absent or must withdraw from decision-making due to a conflict of interest. Alternates are required to attend all meetings and functions of the Board. While attending any regular or special meeting of the Board and serving in place of a regular Board member, alternate members have and may exercise all the duties and powers of a regular member. The term of office of the members of the Board shall be for three (3) years. The Board of Adjustment meets every last Thursday of the month, 6:30 p.m., Council Chambers. Members are paid $10 per meeting.
