Chief:

 

Michael L. Scott is currently the Chief of the Smithfield Police Department. Chief Scott came to Smithfield in October of 2009. He previously worked 25 years in law enforcement in Iowa. He holds a master's degree in law enforcement justice and administration from Western Illinois University and is a graduate of the 189th session of the FBI National Academy. Chief Scott is dedicated to the community policing philosophy and encourages communication between the police department, the residents and visitors of Smithfield.

 

Capt. Bruce Gentry currently serves as the Patrol Commander for the Smithfield Police Department. In that position he is responsible for all patrol operations within the department.  Capt. Gentry also oversees the department’s community policing efforts, departmental in-service training and numerous other administrative duties. Capt. Gentry has served with the department since 1992.  He holds two bachelor's degrees from North Carolina State University and a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  Capt. Gentry is also a graduate of the Administrative Officers Management Program (AOMP) at NCSU and the 222nd Session of the FBI National Academy.

 

Ms. Lynne Kirby is the Support Services Manager for the police department. Ms. Kirby has been with the department since July of 1996. She began her career with the Town of Smithfield Finance and Planning Department in 1992. In 2007, Lynne assumed the duties of this newly created position and is responsible for all civilian functions including evidence, police records, animal control, and communication and computer technology issues. Ms. Kirby is a native of Johnston County. She attended Johnston Community College where she received a Paralegal Degree. She is currently working on her bachelor's degree from Mount Olive College.

 

Lieutenant Keith Powell serves as the Lieutenant of Investigative Operations. Lieutenant Powell has been with the Smithfield Police Department since 1994. Lieutenant Powell holds a bachelor's degree from North Carolina Wesleyan College and is a graduate of the 230th session of the FBI National Academy. Lieutenant Powell is in charge of all investigative operations including general investigations, narcotics investigations and the Special Enforcement Team (SET) operations.
