  1. It is the policy of the Town of Smithfield to hire only those persons who are lawfully authorized to work in the United States. As a condition of employment, individuals hired by the Town are required to present proof of identity and of their legal eligibility to work in the United States before they can begin work.
  2. Applications are accepted only for the positions that are vacant. Applications will be accepted Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., except holidays and must be received by 4:00 p.m. on the closing date indicated for each vacant position.
  3. Any person wishing to apply for a position that is not advertised should complete a postcard stating what position(s) he/she is interested in. Once that position becomes vacant, the postcard will be mailed to the applicant and the applicant may request an application at that time. Postcards are kept on file for a period of six months.
  4. Applications that are received unsigned, incomplete, or after the closing date will not be processed. Applicants who DO NOT meet the minimum requirements for the position will not be considered for employment.
  5. Applications, resumes, transcripts, letters of reference and other information will become the property of the Town of Smithfield and cannot be returned.

POLICE OFFICER
5 NEW POSITIONS

Town of Smithfield, NC. Performs responsible protective service work in the protection of life and property through enforcement of laws and ordinances involving an element of danger. Applicant must be a citizen of the United States, at least 21 years of age, and have any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and enrolled in or completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) as mandated by the North Carolina Education and Training Standards Division. Hours worked by rotating shifts. Applicant will be required to complete a background investigation, CVSA examination, physical, drug screening exam and psychological examination. One year State-required probationary status. Beginning Salary Range: $30834.44 to $34009.56, depending upon education and experience. Salary increase of 5% upon successful completion of a Town-required six-month probationary period. Possibility for annual Cost-of-Living-Adjustment, merit increases, and career ladder program increases. Only qualified applicants should apply.

WATER PLANT OPERATOR
1 Position


Applicants should possess good analytical and mathematical skills and mechanical ability. As a trainee, the employee must be able to learn chemical and biological principles pertinent to water treatment operations. The use of simple math calculations will be routine components of the job. The job requires working a rotating shift. A Water Plant Operator’s Grade C level certificate from the State of North Carolina is required within 18 months of employment. Educational Requirements: Graduation from High School and some experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicant will be required to complete a drug screen, criminal history check, physical and Driver’s License Check. Must have valid NC Driver’s License. Competitive salary and excellent benefits. Employee will be eligible for paid vacation, sick leave, paid holidays, insurance, longevity bonus and other benefits. Candidates who already possess a Grade C level certificate will start at 5% above the starting salary; a Grade B level certification will start at 10% above the starting salary as a Water Plant Operator II; and a Grade A level certification will start at 15% above the starting salary as a Water Plant Operator III. A possible 5% increase in hourly rate of pay after six months.
