PUBLIC UTILITIES DEPARTMENT

The Town of Smithfield Water Treatment Plant will temporarily stop feeding ammonia in combination with chlorine for approximately six weeks (beginning on or about February 22 to approximately April 5) for disinfection of the town’s distribution system. State and Federal regulations require that all public water systems using chloramines as a disinfectant stop the feed of ammonia and switch to a chlorine only disinfectant to ensure that no bacteria are present which may have adapted to the presence of ammonia in the water.

Customers undergoing kidney dialysis and owners of aquarium fish should be aware that the water will contain more chlorine for approximately six weeks.

Customers may notice a stronger chlorine odor and taste during this time period. A slight color change may also be observed.

For more information, you may contact the Smithfield Water Treatment Plant at 934-2661 or the

Smithfield Public Utilities at 934-2798.
