Division of Investigations

The Smithfield Police Department, Criminal Investigations Division, includes four (4) sworn criminal investigators. The division is comprised of two (2) general investigators that are Master Officers, one (1) Sergeant and one (1) Lieutenant. All investigators receive advanced training and have Advanced Law Enforcement Certificates awarded by the Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

Criminal investigators are responsible for primarily investigating felony crimes. The felony offenses are, but not limited to: Robberies, Homicides, Sexual Assaults, Crimes against children, Burglaries, Frauds, Embezzlements, Arsons, Aggravated Assaults, Larcenies, and any other crimes that require extended amounts of time and/or experience that is not always possible within the patrol division. Investigators are also responsible for locating missing persons and conducting background investigations on all new hire candidates.
