Wastewater Odor Concerns Explained
Some citizens in South Smithfield have recently been concerned about periodic “sewer smells”.
Johnston County is in phase II of their wastewater rehabilitation project that began in 2015. The current phase entails work along the sewer outfall that runs along the Neuse River to the Wastewater Treatment Plant located south of Smithfield. Some of the work involves removing and repairing and/or replacing tops from manholes. The project is expected to be completed in late November. Until that time, citizens in the areas of repair may periodically experience a “rotten egg smell”.
Anyone with additional questions or concerns of safety are asked to call Johnston County Public Utilities at 919-989-5075.
