Public Works Crew Leader (Streets)


The Town of Smithfield is seeking an experienced and motivated
Public Works Crew Leader – Streets to oversee and direct work crews in the Public Works Streets Department. This position requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to operate heavy equipment while ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and assign tasks to crew members, ensuring work is completed efficiently
  • Provide detailed instructions and guidance to workers in the field
  • Oversee the loading, transportation, and preparation of materials and equipment
  • Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, flushers, tractors, and mowers
  • Investigate and respond to citizen complaints and service requests
  • Ensure proper work zone safety, including signage and barricades
  • Enforce safety policies and procedures among crew members
  • Maintain and repair tools, machinery, and equipment used in daily operations
  • Oversee landscaping, street maintenance, and general appearance of public spaces
  • Manage sidewalk, curb, gutter, and street repairs using asphalt, concrete, and other materials

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of asphalt and concrete repair, street construction, and general public works operations
  • Ability to lead and supervise work crews effectively
  • Experience operating and maintaining heavy construction equipment
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices for public works operations
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to handle service requests from the public
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and follow written and verbal instructions

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent with five to seven years of experience in skilled maintenance and construction work, preferably in public works
  • Experience operating heavy construction equipment
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Completion of Work Zone Safety Training from the North Carolina Department of Transportation
  • Must have a valid Commercial Class B North Carolina Driver’s License

Police Officer I ($5,000 Sign on Bonus)


This is a continuous posting; applications are processed and evaluated as they are received.

Performs responsible protective service work in the protection of life and property through enforcement of laws and ordinances involving an element of danger. Applicant must be a citizen of the United States, at least 21 years of age and have any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is preferred. Fully qualified candidates may qualify for a Sign-on Bonus. Hours worked by rotating shifts. 

 

Applicant will be required to complete a background investigation, CVSA examination, physical, drug screening exam and psychological examination.  One year State-required probationary status. Must have valid NC Driver’s License. Competitive salary and excellent benefits. Employee will be eligible for paid vacation, sick leave, paid holidays, insurance and other benefits.

 

Compensation: Starting Annual Salary $60,000
