Welcome to Smithfield

On behalf of the governing body of the Town of Smithfield, our Town Council, I welcome you to our hometown Smithfield. Smithfield has many things to offer our citizens, patrons and "newcomers". Smithfield happens to be the County seat for Johnston County. We are located in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina. We are approximately 30 miles east of Raleigh, approximately 125 miles to the eastern coast and 104 miles north of the South Carolina state line. Our population, as of the 2003 census, is 11,601 although Smithfield's population increases dramatically during the day hours. Many patrons along Interstate 95 stop to shop at the famous "Carolina Outlet Mall" and dine at our restaurants. [read more of the Mayor's message]

Notice: Statewide Landfill Ban On Plastic Containers

EFFECTIVE - Oct. 1, 2009

The State of North Carolina has issued a statewide ban, effective October 1st prohibiting the disposal of plastic containers in landfills. To be in compliance with this ban, the Town of Smithfield sanitation customers will no longer be able to dispose of plastic containers with their household waste. The new landfill ban refers to “plastic containers” that have a neck smaller than the base, “excluding plastic motor oil containers”. The Town is pleased to be able to offer several options for the disposal of theses items. Sanitation customers may utilize any of the following three (3) options:

1. Plastic items can be bagged separately (with the lids removed) and placed at the curbside on your scheduled collection day. For residents who wish to use their own container to separate plastic items, a Town decal that reads “Plastics Only” must be placed on each container. These decals can be requested from the Town’s Public Works Office by calling 919-989-6570 There is no charge for these decals. It is important to note; however, that this option is not a move back to a curbside recycling program, rather it is offered as a way to comply with this new State law.

2. Residents can bring items to the Town’s Convenience Site located at 231 Hospital Road. Operating hours are Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 4:00 pm. For your added convenience, the Site will be open on Saturdays from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm.

3. Residents may also chose to utilize the County Convenience Site free of charge with no decal required to dispose of their recyclables. The nearest site location (for most Town residents) is off North Bright Leaf Blvd. beside Chick-Fil-A at 22 Shelter Way.

For additional information please contact the Town of Smithfield
Public Works Sanitation Office (919) 989-6570.
