At the August 19, 2025, regular meeting of the Smithfield Town Council, members unanimously appointed Dr. Gettys Cohen Jr. to fill the vacant District One Council Seat. Dr. Cohen will serve the remainder of the unexpired term, which runs through November 2025.

This appointment follows a public and transparent process that began with the introduction of three applicants at the August 5th Town Council meeting. The Town hosted a Meet & Greet on August 12th to provide residents the opportunity to meet the candidates, ask questions, and engage in the selection process. The Town Council wishes to extend its heartfelt appreciation to Jeff Jaminia and Felicia Baxter for their time, dedication, and thoughtful participation throughout the process.

Each of the candidates brought valuable perspectives and a shared commitment to public service, and we are grateful for their engagement.
