What is the Study?
The Town of Smithfield is studying the transportation conditions in its downtown. The primary study area is Smithfield’s Downtown Municipal Service District, from the Neuse River to Brightleaf Boulevard.
The project is assessing the following:
- Traffic levels and flow
- Parking needs
- Bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvements
- Urban design solutions
Why is the Town doing this Study?
The goal of the study is to create a more vibrant downtown that is accessible to all types of transportation while
also optimizing safety and traffic flow on US-70 Business (Market Street).
What will be the result of the Study?
The result of the Study will be a report summarizing the existing conditions in Downtown Smithfield, public
feedback received during the study, recommended projects to improve or enhance transportation downtown,
and implementation strategies.
What have we heard from the public so far?
The Study team participated in the Ham and Yam Festival in May to speak with the public about their goals
for Downtown Smithfield. An online survey was also available between May and July, which received over
100 responses. The last engagement took place at the Oktoberfest on October 12th in downtown
Smithfield. So far, many members of the public have shared that they feel unsafe walking and biking around
downtown Smithfield, and they’re concerned about getting side-swiped while parked on Market Street.
Folks also shared that they would like to see improved or expanded sidewalks and bike facilities, as well as a
reduction of noise from truck traffic on Market Street.
