Animal Control

Pursuant to the Animal Control Ordinance adopted by the Town Council on February 7, 2006, all residents are required to purchase licenses for dogs and cats living in the city limits. The costs of these licenses are $5 for a spayed or neutered pet and $10 for a non-spayed or neutered pet. These tags must be worn by your pet at all times.

The Smithfield Police Department's animal control officer investigates domestic animal complaints and other animal-related calls for service. This includes animal bites, strays, dangerous and domestic nuisance animals, dogs and cats running at large, sick or injured animals, animal welfare checks and the occasional wildlife complaint. The animal control officer assists the county in the control of the spread of rabies.

If you have animal-related issues and need assistance from our animal control officer you should contact the Police Department at 919-934-9411. The operator will take your information and dispatch the officer to your location. Animal Control is available to respond Tuesday - Friday from 10am-3pm. After hours non- emergency calls will be handled on the next scheduled business day. For all other emergency related animal issues (Dog bites etc.), please contact 911 immediately.
