Town of Smithfield Shares Downtown Parking Options Ahead of NCDOT Safety Improvements
11/19/2025

In an effort to fully support our downtown businesses, the Town of Smithfield is preparing for upcoming changes on East Market Street as the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) moves forward with roadway safety improvements scheduled to begin in early December.

While on-street parking will be removed along a portion of East Market Street, downtown Smithfield continues to offer more than 500 convenient parking spaces—including over 300 spaces in public lots and more than 200 on-street spaces throughout the downtown district. These options ensure that residents, visitors, and shoppers can continue to easily access all that downtown has to offer.

While we understand the frustration and inconvenience that this may cause, the Town of Smithfield would like to remind citizens where public parking remains.

Public Parking Lots:

  • County Lot at South 3rd Street & Johnston Street
  • Courthouse Area Parking on South 2nd Street
  • Public Library of Johnston County & Smithfield Lot, located between North 3rd and 4th Streets
  • Parking lot on east side of Wells Fargo Bank
  • Additional smaller public lots located within a short walk of Market Street

In addition to these lots, on-street parking remains available on the following streets surrounding East Market Street:

  • South Front Street
  • North and South Second Street
  • North and South Third Street
  • North and South Fourth Street
  • Bridge Street
  • Johnston Street
  • Church Street

These streets provide access to storefronts, restaurants, services, and holiday events without the need for Market Street parking.

The Town of Smithfield remains committed to working closely with downtown businesses and NCDOT to ensure a smooth transition during these safety enhancements. We encourage residents and visitors to continue supporting our downtown shops, restaurants, and attractions during this improvement period.
