Mayor Andy Moore and Mayor Pro-Tem Sloan Stevens have formally requested a 90-day extension from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) on the Market Street project to allow time for additional collaboration and evaluation of alternatives that better serve the Town’s downtown corridor.
Market Street is a critical artery through Smithfield’s historic downtown and a key driver of local business activity. The Town has expressed concerns about proposed changes associated with the project and believes additional time is needed to fully assess long-term impacts on accessibility, safety, and economic vitality.
During the requested extension period, the Town of Smithfield will establish a Market Street Task Force composed of Town Elected Officials, staff, downtown business representatives, and other stakeholders. The task force is intended to work closely with NCDOT to review project elements, evaluate traffic and safety considerations, and develop alternative solutions that balance transportation objectives with the needs of the community.
“Market Street is the heart of our downtown,” said Mayor Andy Moore. “We support infrastructure improvements, but it is important that we take the time to get this right. A 90-day extension will allow the Town and NCDOT to work together to identify options that maintain accessibility, support our small businesses, and meet long-term transportation goals.”
The Town of Smithfield values its partnership with NCDOT and remains committed to a collaborative approach. Town officials believe the requested extension will allow for meaningful public input and thoughtful planning before any permanent changes are implemented.
Further updates will be shared as discussions with NCDOT continue.
