The Town of Smithfield Water Filtration Plant, in partnership with the Water Distribution Department, will begin its annual free chlorine burnout on February 26, continuing through April 2, as part of routine water system maintenance.
This temporary process involves switching from chloramines to free chlorine to help clean the water distribution system and reduce the potential for bacterial growth within water lines. Chlorine burnouts are a widely accepted practice used by water utilities across the United States to maintain water quality and ensure system reliability.
During this time, some customers may notice a slight change in the taste or smell of their water, or mild discoloration. These changes are temporary and not harmful. Residents who experience these effects are encouraged to flush their plumbing fixtures and water lines for several minutes.
The Town emphasizes that the water remains safe to drink, and no boiling or special precautions are necessary during the chlorine burnout period. Customers with aquariums, dialysis equipment, or other sensitive water uses should follow their usual recommended precautions for chlorinated water.
