The Smithfield Town Council is officially accepting applications to fill the currently vacant District 1 council seat. Interested residents have until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025, to submit their applications.

Serving as a member of the Town Council is a vital role in shaping the future of Smithfield. Council members are responsible for adopting local ordinances and regulations, approving budgets, setting utility rates, and making decisions on major expenditures and zoning changes. In addition, the Council appoints the Town Manager, Town Attorney, and members of various local boards and commissions, including the Planning Board and Historic Properties Commission.

Applicants for the District 1 seat must be residents of that district (view District 1 Map). The council meets twice monthly, on the first and third Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m., and members are also expected to participate in numerous additional meetings and community events. While the annual compensation is $7,500, the position requires a serious commitment to public service.
