Planning Board
The Planning Board meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Smithfield Town Hall.
Applications must be submitted by the first Friday of each month to be considered for an upcoming meeting.

The Planning Board serves in an advisory role to the Town Council on planning, zoning, and development matters within the Town of Smithfield and its Extra Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ). The board helps guide growth and development in a way that supports the community’s long-term plans and goals.
Planning Board Responsibilities
- Review development and zoning requests and make recommendations to the Town Council
- Help guide future growth and development in Smithfield and the ETJ
- Recommend updates to planning policies, ordinances, and procedures
- Assist with updates to the Town’s Comprehensive Growth Management Plan
- Review proposed developments to ensure they meet Town ordinances and planning goals
- Keep the Town Council and public informed on planning-related matters
- Carry out additional duties assigned by the Town Council
Planning Board members are appointed by the Town Council and serve three-year terms.
