Police Administration

Chief Keith Powell serves as the Chief Commander for the Smithfield Police Department. In this position he is responsible for the overall administration and operation of the police department. Chief Powell holds a bachelor's degree from North Carolina Wesleyan College and is a graduate of the 230th Session of the FBI National Academy.

Captain J. Grady serves as the Patrol Commander for the Smithfield Police Department. In that position he is responsible for all patrol operations to include School Resource Officers and Police K-9's.

Captain Grady holds an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. Captain Grady is an Alumnus of the 19th session of the Management Development Program (M.D.P.). He is also a veteran of the North Carolina National Guard.

Captain R. Sheppard serves as the Administrative Commander for the Smithfield Police Department. In that position he is responsible for all Criminal Investigations, Narcotics Investigations, Records, Evidence, Smithfield Housing Authority Officer and Departmental Training. Captain Sheppard is an Alumnus of the 51st Session of the Administrative Officer Management Program (AOMP). Captain Sheppard is also a veteran of the United States Air Force.
