Alligator Steps Learn & Swim! Program provides area families with an aquatic program that is specifically designed for the youngest of swimmers, ages 6mos – 1-yrs. We are a proud member of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) and believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn safe behaviors around the water. Each class is taught by a highly trained Swim Instructor.
At Alligator Steps, we believe that exposing children to the water at an early age can help facilitate their growth and development in all areas, while teaching them to enjoy and respect the water. A portion of each lesson is dedicated to teaching your child water safety and survival techniques. Our 8-‘Step’ program is designed to grow with your child, starting with a water acclimation class that parents and children attend together and “stepping” up to independent swimming.
Experience competitive swimming in a fun, enjoyable environment focusing on stroke technique and development. Must be able to swim 25 yards and complete practice time without assistance.
Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 3-April 30, 2020 (No practice April 14 & 16 due to Spring Break.)

Did you know, that in order to take the Red Cross Lifeguarding class, you MUST pass a pre-course swim evaluation! (Let's face it - Lifeguards have to know how to swim!!!) In the pre-course swim evaluation, you must do the following:
- Swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is NOT allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
- Must tread water for two minutes using only your legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits for this.
- Must complete a timed skill within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Goggles may NOT be used for this. This includes swimming 20 yards, starting in the water; a surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, to retrieve a 10 lb. object; return to the surface and swim 20 yards on their back to return to the starting point, with both hands holding the object, keeping their face at or near the surface to get a breath; upon completion candidates exit the pool without using a ladder or steps.
If you need help in order to pass the above skills and help you become a successful lifeguard candidate, we will have an instructor here to help you on Monday nights, beginning March 2, and continuing until May 4 (no class April 13), from 6-7pm. Come one night or as many as you need.
